Denzel Washington and His Calling
Denzel Washington and His Calling
2 Corinthians 5:17-21 (NLT): 17This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! 18 And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him. 19 For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation. 20 So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!” 21 For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
Denzel Washington has made fifty movies and won two Oscars, but he wrote recently in Esquire, “The biggest moment of my life was when I was filled with the Holy Spirit,” an experience that occurred forty years ago.
Last Saturday, he received his minister’s license and was baptized. In a video he shared online, he said, “It took a while, but I’m finally here . . . If [God] can do this for me, there’s nothing he can’t do for you.”
Denzel Washington is right in ways we cannot begin to imagine. He just received from the President, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. But I think he would say that he was awarded freedom from sin and death when he received and accepted that the blood of Jesus was shed for him and for all of us. Later, he confirmed this and was baptized and received his call to ministry. That is the greatest honor bestowed upon us by God. Denzel did not earn it but simply accepted it from God through Christ.
Literally.
